William manages the plantation that dominates a tiny South Pacific island. Like the disparate collection of labourers who suffer his omnipotence, he has washed up on the beach seeking relief from his failures. A mutually dependant relationship evolves between dysfunctional god and dysfunctional acolytes, the Fishermen, the leader of whom is Tarlie, part thug, part angel, and with whom William is enamoured.
The appearance of a manifestly insane anthropologist, Laura, threatens to blow the convenient arrangement apart. Something must be done, and in the process of doing it passions are released which lead to murder, suicide and a satisfactory resolution for survivors who get to know themselves better as the island recovers from the typhoon.
A cynical, dark and sometimes humorous dissection of the evils caused by colonialism.
